Questions:

Q: How long have you been coding?

A: For about three years now. Took me a while to get the hang of it.

Q: What made you decide to learn to code?

A: My client needed more than I was able to deliver as a graphic designer, so I had to learn to code to do all the jobs he had lined up for me. I also wanted bragging rights when it came to the people around me.

Q: You streamed the development process of your portfolio theme on Livecoding.tv. How was the experience?

A: It was cool, it really got my addiction to livecoding going. It was by no means the best product (Barebones takes that title) but even then, everyone was so supportive. It also started the joke that I work for Tumblr. I had so much fun sitting there, awkwardly talking to a bunch of people I couldn’t see, but they could see me.

Q: When did you first hear about Livecoding.tv? What was your first reaction?

A: I literally typed into Google “code livestream” and it was among the first few results. I came on and was immediately blown away. It was like a whole new world for me. HEYitsLEO’s stream was the first one I attended, and I stuck with him while I worked.

Q: Share an interesting moment/experience you’ve had as a streamer on Livecoding.tv.

A: Interesting, huh? A lot of them are interesting, there’s quite a few people that are funny and keep the chat alive. I think the best experience I had was when I was complaining about my computer’s internet going in and out. One of the people in the stream commented saying “That’s a mac for you”, and I said “No it’s my Windows computer doing it actually.” A couple people in the chat were like “^Rekt.” I thought that was hilarious. Of course I didn’t make fun of the guy, kind of smiled and kept going.

Q: What’s the best thing about Livecoding.tv? What’s the worst/most annoying?

A: Best thing is the community. The community is so supportive and welcoming. My first stream, people were showing me the ropes. Giving me suggestions, telling me where to promote my streams, and giving me some general tips like upping my font size. The annoying part is just the streams dropping and such.

Q: If you were one of co-founders what different would you like Livecoding.tv to do?

A: I think it’s doing all that it needs. But maybe add more social options to it, like integrating a Twitter feed, or having a real profile.

Q: What’s the best thing about coding?

A: Having the older generation thinking you’re some hacking computer prodigy. It’s worth it all.

Q: What it takes to be a good programmer?

A: Persistence. Even if at the beginning, you don’t feel like you’re wired for programming, you’ll eventually experience this shift in your thinking. It takes persistence to get to that point though. You also need to accept when you’re wrong, and take direction well from others.

Q: If you were not a coder, what would you rather be? Why?

A: I was looking into being a criminal profiler, actually. I have a knack for psychology, and that would’ve been the best application for my knowledge – as opposed to being a psychiatrist or psychologist.

Q: Do you think ‘Aliens’ also code? Why?

A: Well considering the sheer amount of possibilities that there are different planets with different lifeforms inhabiting said planets, I’m sure there’s a chance that some planet has the capabilities of creating a computer-like technology and make it so they’re able to do something similar to coding on it. …Did I overthink that?
